Mi‑17V‑5 Afghanistan

A total of 73 Mi-17V-5s were operated in Afghanistan. All Afghan Mi-17V-5s were built by Kazan Helicopters and delivered by Rosoboronexport between 2010 and 2014.
An initial contract included the delivery of 10 helicopters. These helicopter's construction numbers have the country code 784 (United Arab Emirates).
All aircraft of this contract were delivered in 2010 to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates,
where they were modified by AAL Group Ltd. to comply with Afghan Air Force configuration requirements.
A second contract between Rosoboronexport und the United States Department of Defence about 63 helicopters was signed in 2011. The construction numbers of these helicopters have the country code 840 (United States of America).
33 rotorcraft were required for the Afghan Air Force (12 rotorcraft were required to replace battle-damaged and obsolete helicopters).
30 rotorcraft were required for the formation of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and were part of Russian-United States cooperation in the fight against international terrorism.
All Afghan Mi-17V-5s were procured, deployed and maintained by the Non-Standard Rotary Wing Aircraft (NSRWA) office of the United States Department of Defence.
The NSRWA office divided the Afghan Mi-17V-5s into the following batches:

Under the direction of the Non-Standard Rotary Wing Aircraft office, modifications were made to the Afghan Mi-17V-5s. These included the installation of the Ballistic Protection System, the installation of the BIRD Aerosystems Airborne Missile Protection System AMPS-M, the installation of the M240 machine gun on the left and right entry door and the installation of the Afghan National Tracking System.
